Creating a visual universe for Courage
Editorial design · Creative direction
ONS Future Leaders brings together emerging voices from across the energy industry, inviting participants to reflect on leadership, change, uncertainty and the courage to think differently. The Reflections on Courage publication brings these personal perspectives together, with contributors exploring topics such as leadership, making difficult decisions, leading senior teams as a young person, and investing in emerging markets.
The challenge was to create a visual world that could bring these very different reflections together while giving the publication a fresh identity of its own.
Approach: I read all the reflections and developed a visual idea for each one, choosing imagery that connected to the individual story and represented the author behind it.
Although the topics and perspectives varied considerably, I created a consistent photographic language across the publication. I sourced images from different places but selected them to work together as one visual universe, keeping them connected to ONS while introducing a younger, more contemporary feel.
The imagery was designed to work both individually and as a collection, creating a visual thread that carried the reader from one reflection to the next.
Result: The result was a printed publication with a distinct visual identity, bringing together a diverse collection of honest and personal perspectives in a cohesive way. The visual universe gave each reflection its own character while making the publication feel like one piece. The finished publication was printed and distributed, and is also available to read and download through ONS, extending the reach of the reflections beyond the physical publication.
